Mizoram Assembly Elections 2023: Deputy CM Tawnluia Emerges as the Most Senior Candidate

It’s worth noting that Tawnluia held the title of the oldest candidate in the 2018 assembly elections when he contested from the same constituency. He has been a candidate on the party ticket in the years 1987, 1989, 1998, and 2003. Among the 170 candidates vying for victory in the Mizoram polls, Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, at the age of 80, stands out as the most senior contender. Tawnluia, who also holds the position of Vice President in the Mizo National Front (MNF), is running for office in the Tuichang constituency.

In the 2018 assembly elections, Tawnluia, who contested from the same constituency, also held the distinction of being the oldest candidate. He has a long-standing history of running for the party ticket, having contested in 1987, 1989, 1998, and 2003. This time around, Tawnluia faces a challenge from W Chhuanawma of the Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM).

Tawnluia has previously served as the Home Minister in the MNF ministry in 1998 and 2003. Before his political career, Tawnluia spent over two decades as the commander-in-chief of the now-disbanded Mizo National Army (MNA).
